Frequently Asked Questions:
  • How do we start the image serving process?
Please go to our "Get Started!" page.
  • How long does it take to get a disk on-line?
Once your disk is received, we will contact you with an estimated time to being on-line. It often depends on the name of your disk, the disk structure, the number of files on the disk, and the number of files you want to make available to serve or sell. As a general rule, your disk is usually on-line within 3 business days.
  • How long does it take for a file to become available to the customer for download?
The time it takes to bring a file online depends on the current number of queued requests ahead of your customer. On average, the file is usually downloading to the customer's computer within 45 seconds. For those times when the queue is longer than the expected average wait, the customer may choose to have an email sent to them when the file is available for download.
  • With the cost of hard drives being so cheap, why not just copy the data from DVD to the hard drive and forget about the small optical disks?
Yes, hard drives are currently inexpensive and they are only getting cheaper. However, the amount of maintenance increases as the size of the disk increases; second, multiply that by the cost of maintenance which never ends; third, multiply that by the cost of a knowledgeable professional which also increases with the size of the disk. What you will find is that you need a maintenance budget line item for hard drive maintenance. Many studies have been done on this subject. The most inexpensive study seen to date says that for each gigabyte of hard drive space, you spend $4 per year maintaining that gigabyte of data. The cost to maintain data written to optical media is 83% less. By hosting files from CD or DVD, we do not have the large maintenance requirements. Thus, we pass the savings along to our customer.
  • Who are the ideal iDigMedia customers?
Our ideal customer is an organization or individual that wants to serve or sell many different large files on-line. Design Agencies and Photographers are our largest customer base; they place their archive image disks on-line and send their customers, who want the original electronic files, to their web site for delivery of the media. Schools and Libraries serve the largest amount of data from iDigMedia; schools serve their students video files and libraries place genealogy resources on-line. Starting in 2006, we started seeing a lot of Commercial Print companies sign-up with us.
  • Does iDigMedia have a search function to lookup images of interest to my customers?
At the top of every thumbnail page is a form field and search button for your customer to enter a term of interest to them. All the images that match by keyword or directory name will be displayed for the customer to browse.
  • Can keywords be added to my images to help refine my customer searches?
Yes, keywords can be added. Please contact us at our information support line, , or 214-747-4411, for further details.
  • Can I limit the images that customer A sees so that they can't gain access to customer B's files?
Yes. By following the customization rules in this document, you can limit the access so that a customer can't see outside their directory into someone else's media.
  • Does iDigMedia take a percentage of my revenue for each image sold?

  • What information about downloads does iDigMedia collect?
When your customer purchases an image, we collect the date, time, file name, file size, possibly the computer type, the cost, the vendor (you,) and the customer's name if you customized your portal. This information is reported to you at the end of each month. Kagi collects more information in order to appropriately charge the customer's credit card; however, iDigMedia does not obtain any credit card information.
  • Does iDigMedia solicit and sell my images to customers other than those that pass through my web site?
No. We do not try to display or sell your images to other customers. Your images are for your distribution only.
  • Downloading large files via the Internet is slow; is this a viable alternative to shipping disks with data?
Each of your customer's situations is different. The three constraints on large file transfers are time, money, and Internet bandwidth. If your customer has time for you to send them a disk, then they don't have the money to pay for the CD creation, shipping, and tracking; most likely, you do not have a process set up to regain the costs of manual disk mail outs. With fast Internet hotspots popping up all over major cities or even in your customer's home office, it is not difficult for most customers to purchase the bandwidth needed to download your files.
  • Is there a bandwidth cost to download image files?
    No.
  • Are the purchases my customer will make across the Internet secure?
Yes. We use a payment processing web service called Kagi.com. Whenever you sell a product on the web, this service will collect the money and pay you directly. See their web page about secure web transactions at:

    http://faq.kagi.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/ViewFAQs.woa/wa/specificFAQ?FAQ=orderSecurity
  • Will my company's firewall be an issue when downloading or purchasing files?
No. Because your hosted disk resides at our co-location facilities and Kagi.com handles the payment process, both of which are outside of your company's firewall, there will not be any issues or configuration required by your internal IT staff.
  • What disk formats are supported?

    CD: CD-TEXT, CD-ROM, CD-ROM XA, Photo-CD, Multisession CD (Photo-CD, CD-Extra, CD-RW, CD-R), CD-R (read), CD-RW (read)
